With temps frequently in the single digits these days in some parts of the country, none of us should be going outside on the weekends if we don’t have to. Ideally, we can all build a fire (or crank up the thermostat) and hibernate on the couch until Monday morning. As if you needed any inspiration to stay put, we’ve rounded up our best warm drinks that’ll make you want to cozy up. And no, they don’t all have booze in them, either.
1. Mint Hot ChocolateThere’s nothing more winter-appropriate than a big mug of hot chocolate. Unless you also happen to have a big chunky knit blanket, too. This is an old recipe of ours, and we haven’t changed a thing because it’s perfect and oh-so-easy to pull together. Of course, if you’d rather not deal with melting your own chocolate, we have a few ready-to-go mixes that you can add to your cart the next time you’re shopping.
2. Brûléed CappuccinoDon’t settle for a regular cappuccino when you can have a brûléed cappuccino! You’ll just need a culinary torch (we’re partial to this one) in order to caramelize the sugar, which gets sprinkled on top. This recipe makes a smooth, caffeinated drink that’s just a little more special than your usual weekday morning coffee run.
3. Hot Buttered Rum
This drink couldn’t be easier to make or double (or even triple!) for a larger group. You simply mix up some brown sugar, butter, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves; divide it all into some mugs; add rum; and pour in some boiling water.
4. Hot Spiced Cider with CalvadosCider isn’t just for the fall! Especially this cider, which is made with crystalized ginger and Calvados (or whatever apple brandy you happen to have on hand). More of a rum fan than a brandy fan? We’ve got something for you, too: this recipe features cider concentrate and golden or dark rum.
5. Lemon Verbena and Mint Tisane
This is technically a summery drink (lemon verbena is a lemon-scented herb that can usually be found at farmers’ markets during the warmer months) but you can make it during the winter by using the peel from one or two lemons or a stalk of lemongrass. The resulting drink is super soothing, and a nice reminder that summer will be around again—eventually.
6. Chai
We strongly believe that every kitchen needs a mortar and pestle. It’s a fun way to really learn about deep, rich flavors of freshly ground spices. It’s also the key to making this spicy, warming tea. To make it, you’ll start by crushing up cinnamon sticks, allspice, cloves, and peppercorns. Steep that with cardamom pods and ginger, and then with some black tea. Serve your mixture with milk and honey, and snuggle up with a good book.
7. Williams Sonoma Chocolate Truffle Coffee, $15 for 12 ounces
Don’t have time to make a special drink? Just swap out your usual morning coffee grinds for this bag of rich, indulgent pre-ground coffee. It’s silky, well balanced, and brimming with decadence. To make it, we take our premium South American Arabica coffee beans, medium roast them, and then expertly ground them to the perfect consistency. Brew a big pot and bring a travel mug along with you as you run all those errands. Just promise us you’ll take it easy later!

Hang in there with me on this one. It’s a study in efficiency, and with some faith, it all comes together in the end. In short, poach a whole head of cauliflower in an olive-oil dappled, chile-spiked, beer-based broth, then wedge it & roast it until golden-crusted and butter tender. At the last minute, use that same broth to cook your favorite pasta. Serve it all up in a bowl with a shower of fresh herbs.
PRO TIP: Only add as much pasta as you’ll eat to the broth. It’s not great for leftovers. Use whatever pasta you like – I used a whole wheat fusilli here, but you could use penne, or one of the alternative grain or legume pastas.
I started working on this recipe just before leaving San Francisco. It’s the perfect hearty bowl for cold nights, wintery weather, or summer in SF. A squeeze of lemon brightens everything up.

I’m hoping this avocado citrus salad can bring us out of dreary January.
Because it’s the longest month ever! Right? In other words, we need something bright.
Last week we started with a super traditional, familiar, almost comforting side dish.
This week we’re going out of the box! An avocado citrus salad to bring us some sunshine.
Juicy, tart citrus. And then, creamy avocado. Tangy pickled red onion. Finished with a honey lime vinaigrette to bring everything together.
As a result, this salad is super refreshing. It’s light, bright, tart but sweet from the vinaigrette. And super easy to throw together in these winter months.
When it comes to salads, there are entrée salads and starter salads.
And then there are crazy salads that don’t have any lettuce and a rely on a base of juicy citrus!
Admittedly, this salad is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you want to celebrate all that citrus season has to offer, it’s perfect. I love it so much with lighter chicken dishes, but it’s by far the best with shrimp and fish/salmon dishes.
If you want to serve it for someone who might be like “what the heck” come dinnertime, I suggest starting with only oranges and avocado. You could do cara cara or blood oranges, heck you could even do mandarin oranges drained from juice. It’s definitely a way to get someone interested when the grapefruit or meyer lemon may freak them out.
I absolutely love that you can make this dish sweeter (blood orange, meyer lemon) or more tart (grapefruit, lime!). It’s customizable to your palate. And if you’re feeling it, you can throw the whole thing over some greens to bulk it up too!
Here are just a few of the dishes I love with the avocado citrus salad:Yogurt Marinated Lemon Chicken
Skillet Sea Bass with Pistachio Butter
Cajun Salmon with Salted Lime Butter
Avocado Citrus Salad
A deliciously fresh and invigorating avocado citrus salad with honey lime vinaigrette. It’s creamy, tart, sweet and refreshing!
So bright it makes me happy.

I’m sharing side dish secrets, starting with parmesan roasted broccoli for the happiest life ever.
Welcome to Side Dish Sundays! Here’s the thing. I majorly STRUGGLE with side dishes. Not everyday. But still… often enough that I was inspired to share some of my favorite side dishes, if even for selfish reasons so I have a more complete list to go on.
When I shared these 45 lunch ideas at the start of 2019, a few of you reached out and asked me to do so with side dishes.
But the thing is… is that I don’t have enough. I don’t even have enough on here for every day life that I can use. As someone who gets bored with meals all the time, switching up an easy side dish is KEY.
Making sure that we have something equally delish to eat on the side is super important. My mom was the queen of family dinner when I was a kid. Nearly every single night, she had a meal made with at least two side dishes, sometimes even three. It was satisfying and nourishing and something that I remember as a kid. I feel like it really played a role in our family dinners. And it’s not like her side dishes were super fancy or took a long time to make. But they all went together. And were delicious.
I may not have a side dish to share with you every single Sunday, but I’ll share them at least once or twice a month so by the end of 2019, we can build our side dish repertoire by 20 or 30 recipes. Some may be super simple (like this one!) and some may be a little more involved (think my favorite quinoa salad). But the best part? I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite dishes to pair these with!
I wanted to kick things off with a very easy, probably fairly well known broccoli recipe. In fact, a lot of you are probably familiar with this one. This parmesan roasted broccoli recipe has basically changed my life. I can eat broccoli every day thanks to this recipe! My kids eat it thanks to this recipe. The flavor is insane. There is crunch and texture. Some nuttiness and cheesiness. What more do we need?
The original easy recipe is from Ina Garten, however I simplify it even more. Olive oil, parmesan, pine nuts. That’s it. Oh, and after that, a pinch of salt and pepper. As a result? We eat broccoli all the time now.
This is huge. It’s super delicious on its own, but I often take leftovers (or even roasted a batch specially for this reason) and mix them with quinoa, whole wheat orzo or another grain. My favorite easy dinner for myself is some chickpea pasta with this roasted broccoli tossed in. It’s SO good. And super filling. It’s easily the most made side dish in my house.
My favorite meals to serve with Parmesan Roasted Broccoli:While I feel like this list could be endless because this is easily the most often made side dish (aside from kale chips!) in our house, these are some of my favorites to make with the parmesan roasted broccoli:
Best Ever Lemon Roasted Chicken
Skillet Smothered Chicken and Mushrooms
30 Minute Cajun Salmon with Salted Lime Butter
Red Wine Marinate Flank Steak with Caprese Salsa
Pesto Chicken Parmesan Sliders
Chili Garlic Chicken Skewers with Yogurt Dip
Havarti Arugula Grilled Cheese
Butternut Goat Cheese Stuffed Pork Tenderloin
Pan Crisp Salmon with Dijon Cream
Garlic Brown Sugar Flank Steak with Chimichurri
Parmesan Roasted Broccoli
This parmesan roasted broccoli is irresistiable and will turn even the biggest broccoli haters into broccoli lovers! Major flavor in this roasted broccoli!
The crunchy bits are my fave!
